Elaeis guineensis flower & fruit
Ba di nsamba (Kongo), oil palm, palmtree, palmier a huile.
A stout, single stemmed, upright palm growing to 15 – 18 m tall. Trees may last up to 200 years. Each year 20 – 25 new leaves are formed. The root system comprises a dense mat of adventitious roots which can grow to considerable lengths. Normally roots are found 20 – 60 cm deep in a radius of 3.5 – 4.5 m. The oil palm starts flowering in its 3rd. year. Fruits mature 6 months after fertilization and a fully developed bunch can weigh up to 70 kg. Average weight is 15 – 25 kg and a palm will produce 5 – 15 bunches per year. As the tree gets older fewer bunches are produced but they become heavier. Individual fruits (oil palm nut) are oval 3 – 6 cm long and contain a seed (oil palm seed) (Raemaekers 2001).
